Origins of the Craftsman Style
Before we delve into what it takes to achieve the perfect craftsman kitchen, it’s worth discussing where the craftsman style came from. In a response to the Industrial Revolution, the American and British “Arts and Crafts” movement emphasized the importance of handcraft and workmanship. Because of this, it should come as no surprise that this style employs a large amount of custom carpentry and masonry. Not only does this use of wood and stone create a cozy environment, the handwork and custom finishes ensure that your kitchen is 100% your own.
Textures and Color Palette
As we touched on earlier, materials used in this style often include stone and wood. The color palettes however are much more flexible than the other styles in our series. Some individuals prefer painted wood over stained, a light palette over a dark, or more stone than wood. The main thing to remember is that the emphasis should be on the workmanship present in elements like the cabinets, backsplash and flooring.
Cabinetry and Flooring
If you’re going to spend money on something, it should be cabinetry and flooring. High quality wood is not cheap, and neither is high quality craftsmanship. Before you begin your kitchen renovation, shop out multiple options for your custom cabinetry to ensure you get the best combination of price and quality.
When it comes to finishes, feel free to get creative-- choose from a variety of options like rough-hewn, stained, painted, or even immaculately engraved wood. Decide on this aspect of your kitchen first, and let it guide you through the rest of the steps.
Hallmarks of the Craftsman Style
Wood and stone aren’t the only staples in this style. Craftsman style homes often have an open floor plan, because the architects of this time were opposed to the stuffy rooms popularized during the Victorian Era. The also boast frequently exposed beams, fireplaces, built-in furniture, and built in light fixtures. Consider adding bench seating, bay windows, inset lighting, or an island to your kitchen floor plan; and if your living room is just off the kitchen, consider a carpet runner that leads straight from your kitchen table to your hearth.
