Origins of the Bohemian Style
Historically, “Bohemians” refers to two groups: The poor Parisian artists of the 19th century and the nomadic Czech Romany. But, when we think of Bohemian style today, visions of fabric flowing in the wind, flowers, exotic patterns, tapestries and an abundance of color may come to mind. Partly popularized by a resurgence of 60s culture and brands like Free People, this style is a popular fashion statement. But, like most things in fashion, art, and design, this style was adapted into a staple of interior design.
If you’re a free spirited, nature loving, artistic personality, with a taste for things from far away lands and a full color palette, consider this style when designing your home and kitchen.
Inspired by Fashion
If you want to nail this interior design style, two features of the Bohemian style are paramount: Flowing fabric and color. If you get lost on your design journey, let those two aspects guide you. Incorporate flowing curtains, live foliage, patterns, color, and more color into your design!
Start with a Blank Canvas
Like any good painting, it’s best to start with a blank canvas. At its heart, this style is maximalist, but with so much going on with decor, furniture, and the walls, when it comes to your countertops, consider white quartz, marble, porcelain, or any white stone. And make sure to give to your walls and window frames a fresh coat of paint, so they look clean and bright!
Let Your Inner-Artist Out
Now that you have your canvas, it’s time to let your inner artist get to work! The first place to start is the walls. Pick a fun patterned wallpaper or consider an unconventional coat of paint. Many stores sell textured rollers allowing you to give a shabby chic vibe to your walls. Here are a few ideas from Interior Designers, Laurel and Wolf to get you started!
Decor
When it comes to the furniture you pick, feel free to mix and match styles, fabrics, and textures. The way to do this without your design looking scatterbrained, is to have one common through line in your design. For instance, if your table legs are in different styles, make sure they’re the same color wood. Another big part of Boho decor, is poofs, pillows, and throw blankets. These a great way to create a cozy environment and display your color scheme.
Little Touches
Once the paint dries and the decor is in place, it’s time to get to work on the little touches that will help your kitchen design to flow together. Use little moments like patterned tea towels, fresh plants and flowers, or even some uniquely painted cabinets. And don’t forget the color! You can even add it to your pots, pans, and silverware.
