Tue Nov 24 2015
You're all excited because you have decided to remodel or upgrade your kitchen with a brand new shiny refrigerator. That's all good. But as a smart homeowner, there are few things your checklist should definitely have. Firstly consider the type! Do you want a bottom mount vs. top mount refrigerator (more) or a side-by-side vs. french-door refrigerator (more)? Once you get an idea about the type, you need to consider your kitchen space plus the space you will require when you open the refrigerator doors. We've put together some easy tips to make your refrigerator purchase experience more enjoyable.
Measure Height, Width and Depth
You need three different dimensions: height, width and depth. To measure height, hold the tape at the very top and pull down all the way to the ground. To measure width, place the tape on the left side of the fridge and measure all the way to the right side. To measure depth, place the tape against the wall and extend outwards to the farthest point of your fridge. These measurements are a deciding factor when it comes to the type of refrigerator.

Measure Refrigerator Door
This is a common mistake that many people make when buying a refrigerator. It is very important to consider how wide your refrigerator doors open. Answer these questions: a) Is the door blocking a walkway or taking over your kitchen space? b) Is there enough space on the hinge side so it won't hit your walls? Depending on the type of your fridge you want, the door might also require additional space to allow more access to refrigerator bins. Keep these tips in mind while purchasing your next fridge.
Leave Room for Ventilation
Your refrigerator needs to breathe. Measure an extra inch for the back and the top of the refrigerator. This provides for better ventilation.
Consider the Doorways
You have figured out the measurements for your refrigerator, the space around it and accommodated for ventilation but don't forget to consider if your new refrigerator will fit through the doorways of your house. This is extremely important and helps avoid issues during delivery/install of your appliance.
Moving In Your Refrigerator
When your refrigerator is ready to be delivered, clear all walkways and doorways for delivery crew to carry and install your appliance. Be patient with your refrigerator. It usually needs approximately 2 days to function completely. When all is said and done, pat yourself in the back for being a smart homeowner!
