Counter Depth vs. Standard Depth Refrigerators

Thu Mar 03 2016

When you're ready to buy a refrigerator, you start thinking of whether you prefer side-by-side over a french-door (more) or a top-freezer over a bottom-freezer (more). But another deciding factor in the process of the refrigerator purchase is the decision between a counter depth and a standard depth refrigerator. In this blog, we're looking at the pros and cons of each type so you can make an informed decision.

    Counter Depth Refrigerators

A counter depth refrigerator is designed to flush fit with the cabinets and does not protrude from the cabinets. This way you can't see the sides. When it comes to counter depth, the average depth ranges from 25'' to 30''. They are generally shallow and wide.

    Pros

    1. The counter depth refrigerators are more aesthetically pleasing when it comes to kitchen design and provide a clean uniform look.

    2. You will experience a better kitchen flow because the refrigerator is not sticking out leaving you more room.

    3. Since they are wider than standard depth refrigerators, you can store bigger party platters and trays with ease. Plus with shallow depth, you can reach the back of your fridge easily.

    Cons

    1. When it comes to price, they are generally more expensive than standard depth refrigerators.

    2. When it comes to storage, they are smaller than standard depth refrigerators.

    Keep in mind

While measuring for a counter depth refrigerator, make sure there is enough clearance room so your refrigerators doors can swing out.

    Standard Depth Refrigerators

Standard depth, also known as full depth, are the traditional style of refrigerators. They usually stick out about 6'' from the counter space. The average depth ranges from 30'' to 34''.

    Pros

    1. If you're on a budget, standard depth refrigerators are much more affordable and several options are available in the market.

    2. If you have a big family or find your refrigerator usually full, you will appreciate the storage capacity of a standard depth refrigerator.

    Cons

With the standard depth, you will have about 6'' of refrigerator protruding from the cabinets. This has 2 disadvantages:

    1. The kitchen design will not look uniform or seamless.

    2. This will also take up more space in your kitchen which could be used for cooking prep. If you have several family members, this can disrupt kitchen flow.

    Final Thoughts

Eventually it depends if your goal is to have something sleek and built-in with lots of kitchen space or you're looking for lots of storage and clearance around the door is not an issue. The best way to start is to measure out your refrigerator area (more), look at the pros and cons and pick the refrigerator style (top freezer, side-by-side, all-refrigerator, bottom freezer, french-door etc.).
