Before you buy a washer 101
Thu Jan 26 2017
Investing in a washer is confusing since there are so many options available in the market. That's why we have put together a checklist of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a washer.
Space
How much room do you have for your washer? Washers can range from 24 to 30+ inches wide. Start by grabbing a measuring tape and measure out the area where you will put your washer. Remember to keep some room for washer doors as well so they don't restrict passage or bang against the wall.
Capacity
If you're living by yourself, you probably don't need a huge capacity washer. But if you wash frequently and do big loads, you might want to invest in a bigger tub size. Generally, the capacity can range from 2.45 cu. ft. to 5.6 cu. ft. If you're looking for a bigger load capacity, the washers without agitators are a good option.
Budget
A good washer can cost you anywhere from $400 to $1,700. It all depends on what are you expecting from your washer. If you get something basic, you will still enjoy good performance minus the fancy features such as steam for stain removal, spin speed settings and more. If budget is tight, stick to traditional colors instead of trendy colors that cost a bit more. Traditionally top loaders are cheaper than front loaders. High efficiency top loaders perform very well but they can get a little pricey.
Front Load Vs. Top Load Washer
Ahhh...the age old battle between the traditional top loaders and modern front loaders. If you deal with a lot of heavy stains, front loaders do better than top loaders. If you want to maintain the quality of your clothes, look for a front load or top load without the agitator. (More on Front Load Vs. Top Load)
Energy Conscious
If you want to save on water and energy bills on your washer, look for washers that are EnergyStar certified. This will save you 25% on electricity and 35% on water. Compare the Energy Guide labels to get the most accurate information of the products that may interest you.
