The refrigerator is probably one of the most used appliances in your kitchen and home, but let’s be honest—you probably aren’t cleaning it as often as you should be. You may even be asking yourself how one cleans a refrigerator, which is completely fine.

Ideally, we should practice lightly cleaning out our refrigerator weekly and aim to deep clean the fridge about every three to four months in order to keep everything looking shiny and new. We know this might sound like a time-consuming chore, and you might feel like you don’t have the time to get it done, but we’ve put together and explained the best and fastest way for you to easily clean the inside of your refrigerator and make sure it’s always in tip-top shape.

Items You’ll Need

  • Reusable tupperware/containers
  • Baking Soda
  • Sponge or microfibre towel
  • Soap
  • Toothbrush (optional)

3 Simple Steps To Clean The Inside Of Your Refrigerator

Step One

The first thing you need to do is empty out your refrigerator, throw away any unwanted or spoiled food items, and take the opportunity to neatly place everything in reusable containers. This step gives you a chance to also reorganize your refrigerator to prioritize efficiency.

Step Two

Next, you are going to take out any removable shelves and drawers from your fridge and wash/wipe them down by hand. Doing this over the kitchen sink is best, and we recommend sticking to natural products instead of harsh chemicals to clean. For example, you can use a Baking Soda mixture (1 part Baking Soda and 7 parts water), which also helps fight odors, or simple soapy water will also do the trick.

Step Three

After you finish cleaning the removable sections, it's time to wipe down the rest of your refrigerator’s interior. Use a sponge or cloth (whichever you prefer) to wipe down your fridge with the same Baking Soda solution used to clean the removable compartments or with soapy water. If you find you are dealing with tough stains, feel free to scrub with a toothbrush or make a thick paste using Baking Soda and water to leave on for a few minutes. This should help loosen the stain so you can easily wipe it away.

Refrigerator Cleaning Tips

Here are a few of our favorite refrigerator cleaning tips to help you easily maintain a clean fridge with little effort. For more great tips and tricks on all things regarding home and kitchen appliances, make sure to keep an eye out for new helpful articles on our blog!

  • Clean spills immediately after they happen, letting them sit there will make them harder to remove later.
  • Do not overcrowd the refrigerator, this makes it harder to see any spill and tougher to spot spoiled foods.
  • Try to implement a light weekly cleaning so when it's time to deep clean, it will be a breeze, quick and easy.
  • To combat odors, take an open box of Baking Soda or fill an open container with baking soda powder and place it in your fridge (preferably on the bottom shelf). The baking soda will absorb any foul odors to help keep your unit smelling fresh.
